Wireless Viatran Networking System

The Viatran Networking System (VNS) enables wireless centralized monitoring of sensors placed throughout a gas or oil field, or around any facility where measurement is critical. This versatile and cost-efficient wireless design will transition into many applications in the general industrial market as well as the oil and gas industry.

The Viatran Remote Device (VRD) gathers information from the sensors in the field and relays the information wirelessly to a Viatran Hub (VHub). The VHub serves as the communication link for up to 10 VRDs. Each VHub sends the data to a flow computer, SCADA system, or Distributed Control System.

The VRD can be either process or pole mounted, and they are typically powered by an internal non-rechargeable Lithium ion battery that is capable of lasting for a minimum of 1 year, or an external power supply can be utilized. Each device will support 3 analog and 2 digital inputs and will wirelessly pass the information to the VHub at a distance of up to one mile.

The VHub receives messages from all of the VRDs with which it is associated and maps the data received into the assigned Modbus registers. The information is then passed so that the data can be accessed by the user.

“The VNS will keep site managers current on the condition of their production resources,” said Douglas Joy, Oil and Gas Segment Leader for Viatran. “In these challenging economic times, management is alerted to problems which will enable them to minimize lost production and maximize employee productivity by reducing or eliminating non-productive, time-consuming visits to remote locations.”

“Viatran has long been known as a supplier of pressure transmitters for the oil and gas industry,” said Dave Shepard, Vice President Industrial Segment. “In the past six months, however, we have begun implementing a strategy aimed at making Viatran the go-to supplier for complete, integrated control solutions. One key part of that strategy includes the introduction of several new products that can help our customers achieve better control of their industrial applications.”

Some typical applications include natural gas and oil pipelines and wellheads, gas compressors, and/or offshore or onshore oil and gas rigs.
